Each profile focuses on how these groups adapt, arm, and act, offering insight into the real-time threats shaping regional and national security.

Al-Qaeda

Active Provinces: Yemen, Syria, parts of the Maghreb (particularly Mali, Algeria), Pakistan-Afghanistan border

Founded by Osama bin Laden in 1988, Al-Qaeda is a transnational jihadist movement that rose to prominence with the 9/11 attacks. Though diminished, its decentralized franchise model allows regional affiliates like AQAP and AQIM to operate with autonomy. It focuses on strategic patience, embedding in local conflicts and populations while maintaining global jihadist objectives.

Islamic State

Active Provinces: Iraq, Syria, Somalia and Somaliland, Sahel, Mozambique, Khorasan Province

Emerging from Al-Qaeda in Iraq, ISIS declared a caliphate in 2014. Though territorially defeated, its insurgent cells remain active across Syria and Iraq, conduction ambushes, IED attacks, and assassinations. The group emphasizes high-impact media ops and brutal tactics to retain influence and inspire global affiliates.

Hezbollah

Active Provinces: Lebanon (stronghold in southern Lebanon and parts of Beirut), active in Syria and Iraq

A Shia Islamist political and paramilitary organization, Hezbollah functions as both a militia and political party. Funded and trained by Iran, it plays a major role in regional proxy conflicts. The group boasts sophisticated weaponry, drone capabilities, and a hybrid warfare model that blends terrorism with conventional and irregular tactics.

Haqqani Network

Active Provinces: Eastern Afghanistan (Khost, Paktika) and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) of Pakistan

An offshoot of the Afghan Taliban with close ties to Pakistan's ISI, the Haqqani Network specializes in high-profile, complex attacks, specifically in Kabul. Known for suicide bombings and urban warfare, the group operates semi-independent of the broader scope of the Taliban and plays a key role in regional jihadist logistics.

Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)

Active Provinces: Ex-FATA regions in Pakistan, with cross-border sanctuaries in Afghanistan

Formed in 2007, the TTP aims to overthrow the Pakistani government and implement strict Sharia law. Its operations include targeted killings, IEDs, and suicide attacks. Though weakened by internal splits and military operations, it has resurged recently, exploiting Taliban gains in Afghanistan to rebuild its networks.

The Taliban

Active Provinces: Afghanistan

The Taliban is a Sunni Islamist group primarily comprised of Pashtun members. They ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001 and returned to power in 2021. They enforce strict Sharia law and have strong alliances with Al-Qaeda.
